Learning Outcome #6: Develop individual and professional strategies and/or actions that may be taken to promote global health.

A) During the lecture we talked about how we as new graduate nurses can partake in promoting global health. We talked about the sustainable development goals, and how nurses can help work towards them to help reach the 2030 goal to achieve world health. For example, for promoting health we can work at the front lines for advocating for clean water for developing countries. Nurses can advocate for vaccines and make people aware of the need for vaccines, as well as bust any myths surrounding the dangers of vaccines (such as the autism fear). We live in a world of unequals and it is part of the nurses duty to try and bring equality to all, and this can be done by working hand in and with the sustainable development goals, and to make even small changes in our own lives with how we do things, such as recycling or ensuring we wash our hands more often to prevent the spread of disease. Eliminating health disparities in one of the core values in nursing, and is one of the most important things nurses can do to help bring equal and accessible healthcare to all. Nurses need to take on a bigger leadership role in healthcare and push for change, such as creating more accessible care, for example, those of low income.

B)Evidence outside of course content

Evidence 1:

World Health Organization. (n.d.). Opportunities for international work on nursing and midwifery in WHO. Retrieved from http://www.who.int/hrh/nursing_midwifery/internships/en/

The World Health Organization offers jobs for nurses and midwives to work internationally in developing countries to bring accessible medical care to all. I would love to do this as I have a soft spot for helping people and I feel that I can make a difference in the health and lives of people in developing countries. This gob also works hand in hand with sustainable development goals 3 and 4, as i will be promoting health and well being and would be able to educate people on the importance of sanitation and infection prevention.

Evidence 2:

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. (2017). Employment opportunities. Retrieved from  http://www.simcoemuskokahealth.org/HealthUnit/About/Employment

I would like to work as a public health nurse for a while. I believe that I can make a difference in peoples lives as I am in a good place to advocate for the needs of a populations. For example the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is aware of the disparities in their surrounding area, and this would help me target populations and help determine what can be done, while collaborating with the community. This collaboration will help me better understand what can be done to help educate and make healthcare more accessible to all, as well as overall improve the quality of life of the community and its people. 4791018193_d38d242b48_oe9bbdc5f97be6bc38c2dff0000a8dfd8.jpg
